Decorating or redecorating your home is certain to be a fun project, especially if you think of yourself as a creative type. However, once you get started you’ll soon discover that there are a lot of factors to consider. Rather than focus on what you want right now, you’ll have to think about what kind of styles or pieces you’ll want to look at every day years down the line. For changes that are harder to reverse (such as painting your walls), you’ll need to keep resale value in mind as well. You’ll need to balance today’s trends with incorporating timeless pieces.
The easiest way to balance trendiness and timelessness is to divide your new purchases into “short term” and “long term” pieces. It’s unlikely that you’ll replace your couch, coffee table, and rugs in the next few years, so focus on timeless and functionality, rather than anything eccentric. However, for cheaper and more easily-replaceable items like lampshades, throw pillows, and pieces of wall art, go ahead and be as experimental as you’d like.
Even if you decide that dropping serious cash on trendy pieces is worth the investment, you should still keep balance in mind. Having a lot of loud, attention-grabbing pieces in one room can dilute the aesthetic impact of any one piece. So be selective when it comes to the trendy pieces you put in your home—ideally, you’ll have quite a few timeless elements to serve as the perfect backdrop.
